Fishing with the grandkids in New York State
August 21st, 2008We spend a week at the Betty and Wilbur State Park in New York with our son’s family. Our oldest grandson was playing in the Field of Dreams baseball series so our son rented a cabin in the park for a week and invited us to spend the week with them. We jumped at it as it would gives us more time to spend with our grandsons.
This is a beautiful area, with nice cabins and two fishing ponds stocked with bluegill (sunfish) and bass. It is catch and release but it was a lot of fun.
We taught our 3 year and 7 year old grandsons how to fish and it was a ball. The seven year old caught two largemouth bass that were over 14 inches and about 100 bluegills, most of which were the size of your hand or larger. The three year caught around 40 bluegills plus a lot of weeds.
He called the weeds his little fish and the blue gills his big fish. He wanted his picture taken with every fish he caught.
By the end of the trip he was able to cast his line 40-50 feet over the weeds and place it where he wanted it. He is very athletic for his age.
Both of them had a ball catching that many fish and their grandmother and I had even more fun watching them catch the fish. The seven year old is definitely hooked on fishing now.
If you live within a few hours of this park it is definitely worth taking your grandkids there to learn to fish or to provide them an enjoyable fishing trip where they will catch a lot of fish.
Our oldest grandson’s team lost the series but they had a lot of fun playing and we had a lot of fun watching and cheering them on.
This was our first visit to New York State and was amazed how beautiful this state is. This is a definite recommend for a family vacation spot.
